CUTTACK: The executive committee of Medical Council of India (MCI) has reportedly advised the Union Health Ministry not to allow the VSS Medical College and Hospital of Sambalpur to admit 150 MBBS students in the current academic year. This decision was taken after going through the compliance verification report submitted by a three-member MCI inspection team which visited the teaching hospital in May this year, said State Director of Medical Education and Training (DMET) P.K. Dash. According to reports, the executive committee of the MCI noted ‘deficiencies’ in teaching, non-teaching staff and other infrastructural lacunae on the basis of reports submitted by the inspection team. As per the guidelines, the Union Government is unlikely to recommend for renewal of permission for admission of fresh batch of students against the increased MBBS intake from 107 to 150 for 2009-10 academic session. It may be noted here that the VSS Medical College and hospital had got MCI nod for increased intake in 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic sessions. However, the other two government teaching hospitals of the state located at Cuttack and Berhampur have come through the MCI scanner and are likely to be allowed by the Centre to take 150 MBBS students in the current academic year. If the Centre allows SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack to admit 150 MMBS students this year, the increased intake would be for the fifth year in a row and the Cuttack teaching hospital would have its MBBS intake increased to 150 permanently as per the norms of MCI. The SCB Medical College was allowed to increase its MBBS seats from 107 to 150 in 2005-06 academic session. The MCI permission was conditional asking the college to meet the MCI norms every year and seek renewal of permission every year till five years. The MCI had also allowed the college to increase the seats in 2002-03 academic sessions but the same was withdrawn for next two consecutive academic years citing the same reasons.
