SRINAGAR: Two persons were killed and two injured at Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday when police opened fire on a mob protesting against alleged eve-teasing of a woman by the police. Curfew was imposed to control the situation. Reports from Baramulla said that on Sunday evening, the woman, whose husband was detained by the police in connection with a kidnap case, alleged that policemen at the Baramulla police station teased her. She came out of the station and started crying. This was followed by protests by some people and the police swung into action to quell them. However, on Monday morning, hundreds of people, mostly youth, took to the streets shouting anti-police, anti-India and pro freedom slogans. As they started hurling stones, the police fired teargas shells. But the situation went out of control and the police opened fire around 11.30 a.m. Two youths were critically injured and one of them died later. This further provoked the people and unable to control the mob, the police opened fire again, killing one person on the spot and injuring another. Soon the authorities imposed curfew in many parts of the town. Reports said the situation continued to remain tense. Police did not come out with an official version of the incidents.
