IMPHAL: MLA Hellanuddin Khan was attacked with stones and shoes by people of Lilong village in Thoubal district of Manipur on Sunday. His security guards, however, managed to take him away. In the melee, a woman lost consciousness and was taken to hospital. The villagers charged the MLA with taking sides with another village in an incident that claimed the lives of three people. Last week, a resident of Lilong was allegedly shot dead by a person of another village during a quarrel. The Lilong people later lynched the outsider. One person, who sustained injuries during the scuffle, on Saturday died in a hospital. On Sunday, accompanied by some journalists and photographers, Mr. Khan went to the villages to bring about a settlement as there were indications that fresh violence may break out any time. But soon after his arrival, several women hurled shoes at the MLA over the delay in his arrival. Several men pelted stones at him. The Manipur Rifles and police personnel had difficulty in warding off the villagers and escorting the MLA to safety. Mr. Khan said the villagers’ charge was unfounded. In another incident on Saturday night, the house of Fisheries Director Karam Saratkumar, was damaged in a bomb explosion triggered by militants. A car and two jeeps were also damaged.
