Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. Thiruvasagam (second left) listening to the grievance of a student at the Grievances Redressal Day for distance education students at the university in Coimbatore. - COIMBATORE: After the grievances day meetings for regular students of the Bharathiar University and its affiliated colleges, the university has started an exclusive one for the distance education students. The first one was held in the university premises on Tuesday. Nearly 80 complaints/grievances poured in. Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam was present to receive the grievances which came in the form of phone calls, e-mails and also in person. Reacting to the response, the Vice-Chancellor said that since 2006 the strength of students of the School of Distance Education had shot up from 2,000 to 47,000. The courses had been increased from 10 to 97. The most popular was the MBA (Finance), followed closely by MBA (Human Resources). “Though the courses have been streamlined, there were some grievances that had to be addressed on an immediate basis. Also, since the study centres are many and far-flung, receiving and redressing grievances were becoming unwieldy. Hence, it was decided to hold a grievances day meeting every Tuesday,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said. Surprisingly, the nature of grievances was very different from what was expected. Earlier, there were a lot of complaints about not receiving study material on time. “Since that has been taken care, candidates did not have grievances about that aspect. The maximum complaints were on not receiving mark sheets on time because the city centres failed to send the examination and other fee of the candidates to the university on time.” Candidates with grievances could come in person, call over phone or send them via e-mail. Those wishing to call over phone should do so within the stipulated time (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.). E-mail complaints would be addressed via e-mail. Candidates can call on 0422-2427742 / 2428216 / 2428201 / 2425222 or send e-mail to greenboxbu@yahoo.co.in / sde@b-u.ac.in / vc@b-u.ac.in.
