Babli row: BJP wants Manmohan to intervene

Bandaru Dattatreya

HYDERABAD: The State unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh personally intervene in the controversy surrounding the construction of Babli project by Maharashtra government that was against the interests of farmers of six Telangana districts.

The BJP wanted the Prime Minister to direct Union Law Ministry to take up with Maharashtra government the erection of crest gates in violation of the interim orders of the Supreme Court. BJP State president Bandaru Dattatreya blamed the State government for its “callous attitude” in dealing with the issue in that it had served a legal notice on the neighbouring State government rather than informing the Supreme Court about the contempt of its orders.

Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, Mr. Dattatreya said the decision to serve legal notice on Maharashtra was “ridiculous” and reflected the “bankruptcy” of the Congress government in dealing with the issue.

He termed as ‘unconstitutional’ Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s request to the district Collectors and Superintendents of Police to obey the instructions of Ministers and legislators. The Chief Minister should ask the officials to maintain the rule of law under any circumstances, but he was trying to remove the Laxman Rekha between the party and the government which was harmful to the democracy.

Party meet

The senior BJP leader said the party’s State executive meeting to review the performance in the recent elections would be held at Nizamabad on July 4 and 5 where senior leaders like M. Venkaiah Naidu and others would analyse the results for chalking out a future course of action.
