Legal luminaries: Former Attorney-General of India K. Parasaran greeting former Justice Alladi Kuppuswamy in Hyderabad on Sunday. - HYDERABAD: Senior Supreme Court advocate K. Parasaran has stressed the need for lawyers to take initiative in reducing delay in delivery of justice. Expressing concern that “lawyers want to take up every case”, he wanted them to introspect about the number of cases they were filing in the courts. “There were days when senior advocates used to put aside cases considering them to be unfit. We can cut short the number of cases by ensuring that cases are filed in proper way,” he said. Mr. Parasaran, winner of Padmabhushan award, was here to deliver the Umamaheswaram lecture on “modern law as seen in ancient times” organised by the Alladi Memorial Trust here on Sunday. In an hour-long lecture laced with quotes from epics in Sanskrit, he said the concepts of the modern day had references in the epics and unless one knew the concept, it was difficult to interpret them. He likened Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, the trinity, to legislature, executive and judiciary and said the powers of the three institutions were clearly defined and demarcated. In this context, he wanted the courts to be persuasive in their attitude instead of being aggressive. “Every institution owes its power to the people. It is people who delegated the power of decision making to us,” he said exhorting lawyers not to deviate from dharma as “we will perish if we don’t follow dharma”. Mr. Parasaran earlier released a compendium of the lectures organised by the Alladi Memorial Trust. High Court judge Justice G. Raghuram chaired and several judges and legal professionals attended the meeting.
