Olympic Association polls: Hanumantha Rao receives caveat notices from court

VHR terms APOA polls as farce and plans to apprise YSR, Sports Ministry, party high command

Seeks probe into affairs of APOA; gears up for a legal battle

HYDERABAD: The ongoing tussle between two Congress MPs – V. Hanumantha Rao and Lagadapati Rajagopal – appears to be heading for a legal battle over the affairs of Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association.

The controversy is likely to be brought to the notice of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Union Sports Ministry and the party high command by Mr. Hanumantha Rao.

Mr. Rajagopal, who was recently elected president of the Olympic association, had a bitter fight with his party colleague last Sunday.

The issue took a turn when APOA secretary Jagadeeshwara Yadav filed a case in court. Mr. Hanumantha Rao received caveat notices from the court.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Hanumantha Rao launched a broadside against Mr. Rajagopal terming his election as ‘farce’. He said he would not keep quiet and fight it out in the court.

‘Undemocratic’

“How can he become the president of Olympic association, when the election was held in an undemocratic manner,” he said adding that he would personally meet the Chief Minister and seek a detailed probe into the affairs of APOA. “The government should consider taking over the affairs of the controversial sports body, where the election of the whole body was illegal and questionable,” he remarked.

The senior Rajya Sabha member objected to the court notices on the ground that he had only raised the unfair manner in which elections were held.

“I am not going to lie low over the notices. I will fight a legal battle and see that the affair of the sports body is set right,” he said.
