FOR RAIN: A bhajan (left) conducted by Sri Namasankeerthanam Trust at Ram Temple at Ram Nagar and a ‘Varuna Japam’ (right) held at Kalyana Bhajanai Venkata Ramana Swamy Temple on Raja Street in the city on Sunday in view of the delay in the South West Monsoon setting in. —

COIMBATORE: The water-filled plastic containers appeared to symbolise the drinking water crisis staring at the city and the suburbs. Such containers are used to store water because it is supplied only once in five to 15 days. But, on Sunday, the containers had a different role to play.

At a ‘Varuna Japam’ organised at Kalyana Bhajanai Venkata Ramana Swami Temple to invoke divine intervention to break the dry spell, five priests got into the containers and began chanting prayers.

Asked whether the use of the containers was to reflect the city’s problem, a source among the organisers said that normally the temple tank should have been used. But, silt was being removed from it. Therefore, the containers stood in for the tank.

While the prayers and a ‘yagna’ were held at the temple on Raja Street, a ‘namasankeertanam’ was taken out on the streets of Ram Nagar and bhajans were held throughout the day at Ram Temple by the Sri Namasankeertanam Trust.

“While we pray to God for rain, it is also our responsibility to make the best use of what Natures gives us,” said Managing Trustee of Siruthuli Vanita Mohan, who was present at the ‘Varuna Japam’. Siruthuli is a people’s movement to conserve water resources.
