Bangalore: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) arrested a fortune-teller and his three associates, who allegedly duped several housewives to the tune of several lakhs, here on Friday. Sixteen idols, two swords and a multi-utility vehicle were recovered from them.

“ The police raided a place near Kottigepalya on Friday and arrested the accused. Under the pretext of finding hidden treasures, the accused had cheated several housewives,” city Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari told presspersons here on Saturday.

The names of the accused were given as G. Nagaraj (52), M. Vishwanatha Reddy (20) , S. Rajamanikyam (49) and G. Muniraju (38).

The main accused, Nagaraj, is a fortune-teller. The accused would get an idol of a goddess and ask housewives to go out of the pooja room, saying “they would begin the treasure hunt.” When the victims came out of the room, the accused would install the idol they had brought and claim that they had found the hidden treasure in the form of that idol, the police said.

The accused would tell the housewives that the idol was worth crores of rupees.

The accused had collected Rs. 15 lakh from Muniyamma of Kamakshipalya. She had sold a car and gold ornaments, besides mortgaging her house to arrange the money. The accused had collected Rs. 4.5 lakh from Jayamma of Byadarahalli, Rs. 5 lakh from Jayamma of Basavanagudi and Rs. 3 lakh from Lakshmamma of Bommasandra Cross.
