Vijay adjudged cricketer of the year

CHENNAI: T. Rajendran, Commissioner of Police, commended the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) for its administration, saying the game’s future “was safe in the hands of people like (TNCA president) Mr. Srinivasan”.

Rajendran, who presided at the TNCA’s 79th annual day celebrations at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, said he had grown up with cricket.

“The game has become more democratic and it has spread geographically.It has been taken to new levels,” said Rajendran.

Academy at Theni

Srinivasan, in his welcome address, congratulated the Tamil Nadu team for reaching the semifinals of the Ranji Trophy and winning the all-India one-day tournament. Srinivasan said there was a move to modernise the facilities of the stadium to make it more spectator friendly. He also spoke of the TNCA’s success in spreading the game in the Districts, adding that an academy was planned at Theni.

M. Vijay was adjudged the winner of the Bishnuram Medhi Trophy for the cricketer of the year. Vijay, who is in the West Indies with the Indian team, couldn’t attend the function.
