Vayalar Ravi calls for amendments to MCI Act
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi on Saturday called for amendments to the Medical Council of India Act to set in place a regulatory framework to be followed by the private sector.
Addressing a function to felicitate Vellore Institute of Technology Chancellor G. Viswanathan here, Mr. Ravi said the government could not remain a spectator to what was going on in the higher education sector.
Huge private contribution
Education had become an issue in recent times. As a result of improved economic status, every family wanted to put its children through institutions of higher education. In such circumstances, the government alone cannot deliver and private colleges can make a huge contribution.
However, when the demand exceeds the supply [of seats], pricing becomes an issue, Mr. Ravi said, hinting at large sums of money that are demanded of students in private professional colleges.
“The government must have more involvement in such institutions to ensure that they work within a regulated framework, without impinging on their freedom,” Mr. Ravi stressed.
