Shipping Ministry to come out with its action plan on July 1

Special Correspondent

It will have an action programme for renovation of ports

G.K.Vasan

CHENNAI: The Union Shipping Ministry will release its 100-day action plan in New Delhi on July 1, said Union Minister of Shipping G.K. Vasan here on Saturday. It would provide detailed planning and action programme for renovation of ports and a broad roadmap on how to improve their turnover.

He said the Ministry would take a fresh look at all existing projects in which there was private participation. The action plan would give a clear view of the Ministry’s initiative for these projects. At present, the country was in 20th position in shipping trade in the international arena and steps would be taken to improve the position.

Addressing journalists, Mr. Vasan said the Centre was awaiting the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Sethu Samudram project, which was expected after the submission of the Pachauri Committee report. There was no going back on the project, which would give a boost to industrial development of the southern States.

The Union Minister said Central and the State governments were making efforts to allow unloading of relief materials from the MV Captain Ali, meant for Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Earlier, the Minister released the merit list of common entrance test conducted by the Indian Maritime University. The CET was conducted by the university for the first time to admit students to B.Sc (Nautical Science), B.E ( Maritime Engineering), B.Tech (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering), M.B.A in Shipping and Port Management and M.B.A. in International Transportation. Of the 7,000 students who took the CET for all courses, 4,155 have been short-listed. Counselling for candidates, who had cleared the CET, would be held between July 8 and 15 at the IMU headquarters here.
