NLC contract workers to launch indefinite stir today

A.V. Ragunathan

Decision taken at special general body meeting of union

CUDDALORE: The 13,000 contract workmen of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) have decided to go on strike from 6 a.m. on Sunday.

The decision was taken at a special general body meeting of the NLC Jeeva Oppantha Thozhilalar Sangham held at Neyveli on Saturday. The Sangham, affiliated to the All-India Trade Union Congress, voiced its displeasure at the lukewarm response of the NLC management to the demands of the contract workmen.

District general secretary of the AITUC M. Sekar told The Hindu that the trade union had given more than adequate time to the NLC management to respond.

Mr. Sekar said the management did not seem to be interested in holding bilateral talks. Therefore, the contract workmen had unanimously decided to go on strike till the management conceded their demands.

NLC sources said that in the June 2008 talks the trade union had agreed not to resort to strike that would affect productivity and production. But, it had gone back on its words.

The sources said the management was committed to fulfilling the demands of the workmen because it was interested in their welfare. It had already given medical treatment books to a batch of 200 contract workmen and their dependents.

Police forces mobilised

Police sources said heavy force had been mobilised, including a company each of the Armed Reserve Police Force from Chennai, Villupuram and Cuddalore.

They would be posted at Neyveli to maintain law and order along with the Central Industrial Reserve Police Force, which is in charge of NLC security.
