Jagathrakshakan’s election challenged
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The election of DMK candidate S. Jagathrakshakan from the Arakkonam Lok Sabha constituency has been challenged by a defeated candidate before the Madras High Court.
S. Isaac Jebakumar, who contested as a candidate of the Akhila India Jananayaka Makkal Katchi (Dr. Isaac), a registered party, said he was allotted the ‘battery torch,’ a free symbol notified by the Election Commission. When he visited polling stations on the day of polling he was shocked to see the ‘table lamp’ printed against his name in posters put up outside. He sent a fax message to the Chief Election Commissioner and the Returning Officer pointing out the confusion caused by the posters and requesting them to stop polling and announce re-polling. But, polling was allowed to be completed.
Mr. Jebakumar said as per the Conduct of Election Rules, allotment of a symbol to a candidate was final except when it was inconsistent with any direction issued by the Election Commission.
The petitioner prayed the court to declare election of Mr. Jagathrakshakan null and void and declare him the returned candidate.
