CHENNAI: The Chief of the Vigilance Commission has written to Central government offices asking them to sensitise the public about corruption and display on their notice board information pertaining to addresses where complaints of bribery can be lodged. The information on the board to be written in English, Hindi and the local language will carry the message: “Do not pay bribes. If anybody in this office asks for bribe or if you have any information on corruption in this office or if you are a victim of corruption in this office, you can complain to the head of this department, Chief Vigilance Officer, Superintendent of Police of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Secretary, Central Vigilance Commission.” Pointing out that some departments and organisations were not displaying the message on the notice board, the Commission asked the Chief Vigilance Officers concerned to furnish a compliance report expeditiously. According to CBI Superintendent of Police (Anti-Corruption Branch) S. Murugan, displaying the notice would help get vital inputs on corrupt practices. He said the ‘Fight Against Corruption’ SMS campaign launched in August last year had evoked a good response. Of the 27 trap cases registered since January 2008, a majority was based on information received through SMS. “We are planning to repeat the SMS appeal to mobile phone users. Of late, people are volunteering to share information on corruption, which will strengthen our efforts to curb the menace,” he added.
