BANGALORE: The Karnataka Government on Saturday said the Centre had not consulted it before coming out with a proposal on making Class X examination optional. Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Visveshwar Hedge Kageri was reacting to a statement on Thursday in New Delhi by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal. Mr. Sibal said that the government would take steps to table the Bill on Right to Education for providing free and compulsory education to children in the 6-14 age group. He said the Centre intended to make Class X examination optional, permitting students continuing in the same school to take an internal school assessment. Mr. Sibal had spoken on a proposal to replace marks by grades in schools affiliated to the Central Board for Secondary Examination (CBSE) for Class IX and Class X students. When asked about Mr. Sibal’s statement, Mr. Kageri, who spoke to presspersons on the sidelines of the National Conference on Boy Scouts and Guides here, said the State had not been consulted on the proposals. Terming it as a one-sided proposal, he said the Centre till now had neither written or intimated the proposal to the State or sought its views. He said the State would discuss the proposals and forward its views to the Centre. Earlier, Governor Rameshwar Thakur, inaugurated the two-day national conference and lauded the Karnataka chapter of the Bharat Scouts and Guides for its pioneering role in the State.
