Passengers seek more trains

R. Vimal Kumar

Tirupur: With just few days left for the Railway Budget to be presented in Parliament, frequent train travellers here are keeping the fingers crossed, waiting to see whether some of their long pending grievances will be addressed.

In a pre-budget appeal, K. Selvaraj, coordinator, Rail Passengers Welfare Association, said that the Ministry should introduce a passenger train from Coimbatore to Salem considering the heavy rush in the segment.

“It should be noted that buses commuting between Coimbatore and Salem as well as Tirupur and Salem are always full despite high frequency in the services. Hence, a passenger train between Coimbatore and Salem will help the thousands of industrial workers to commute easily,” he pointed out.

He also demanded extension of Tirunelveli-Erode and Jolarpetta-Erode passengers to Coimbatore.

Similarly, more overnight trains from Coimbatore to Chennai should be introduced to ease congestion in the sector.

Meanwhile, Erode-Dharapuram-Palani Railway Extension Citizens Committee has urged the Railway Ministry to allocate at least Rs. 500 crore to expedite the completion of the railway track planned between Erode and Palani via Dharapuram in Tirupur district.

“Till now, only Rs 69 lakh has been earmarked since the survey commenced three years ago,” Lingam Chinnasamy, general secretary of the Committee, pointed out.

According to him, railway services in the sector will immensely help the industrialists in towns like Dharapuram and Kangayam to transport their produce.

Mr Selvaraj said that the Ministry should allocate adequate capital for improvement of infrastructure in busy railway stations like Tirupur.

At present, there is only a counter each on the two platforms to issue a total of about 3,000 tickets a day.
