CHENNAI: Manufacturers would have to join hands to create awareness among users of packaging material on reducing the burden on the environment, said B. Swaminathan, Chairman-Networking, The Tamil Nadu Plastics Manufacturers’ Association.
Speaking at the inauguration of a three-day packaging expo, Compack 09, at the Chennai Trade Centre on Friday, he said, “The importance of increasing the use of recyclable packaging material has to gain momentum.”
The nonwovens technology in packaging was gaining momentum in Chennai, said Anshumali Jain, Director of Texbond Nonwovens. The packaging material using nonwovens were biodegradable but the cost component had to reduce with more research and development, he said.
The lack of development council for packaging was one of the reasons for less research and development on packaging in India, said one of the participants. Over 100 firms are participating in the exhibition.
A wide range of primary and secondary packaging machines and systems, packaging material from paper, plastics, metal and nonwovens are on display.
