ARUPPUKOTTAI: Thirty model schools on the lines of Kendriya Vidyalaya, funded by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, would come up in the State in the educationally backward blocks, Minister for School Education, Thangam Thennarasu, said on Saturday.

Giving away V. Thangapandiyan memorial gold medals to meritorious students of Plus Two and 10th standard of Tiruchuzhi Assembly constituency at Narikudi near here, the Minister said that one of the schools would come up at Narikudi. “Facilities of the schools would be on par with that of Kendriya Vidyalaya. However, the choice of medium of instruction rested with the State Government,” he said.

The blocks where female literacy rate was lower than that of national average had been identified for these schools to encourage education among girls.

Stating that Tiruchuzhi Assembly segment was backward in terms of social, infrastructure and economic development, Mr. Thennarsu said that the constituency had got Rs. 30 crore investment for improving educational infrastructure, like construction of new school buildings, upgrading schools and appointment of new teachers under various schemes.

Two residential schools for girl students under the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidhalaya at A. Mukkulam and Anaikulam had been upgraded to accommodate 100 students each. “The capacity has been doubled for the current academic year so that we can arrest drop outs among girl students,” Mr. Thennarasu said. The Minister said that all efforts would be taken to encourage female education since their education had an important role in the social development of the backward region.

The gold medals have been instituted in the name of former Minister V. Thangapandiyan, father of Mr. Thennarasu. The winners were given Rs. 1,000 and a certificate of appreciation.

The Virudhunagar Collector, Sigy Thomas Vaidhyan, said that Virudhunagar district continued to occupy the first place in overall pass percentage in 10th and 12th examinations despite being dubbed as a backward district. She said that quality of education imparted in Government schools was in no way inferior to that of private schools.

The Chief Educational Officer, S. Nagarajamurugan, and District Educational Officer (Aruppukottai) V. Pandi, were among those who spoke.
