BANGALORE: B.V. Seetaram, Chairman of Karavali Ale, on Saturday demanded the resignation of Home Minister V.S. Acharya accusing him of “masterminding” the attacks on his printing premises and burning newspaper bundles in Mangalore culminating in his arrest and handcuffing in violation of the Supreme Court orders and democratic norms and decency. Mr. Seetaram told presspersons that the Press Council of India had concluded that handcuffing him was against the guidelines of the Supreme Court. It upheld his publication’s plea that the paper be published without threats from any quarters. The council sent its report to the Government for follow up action. Meanwhile, a full bench of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission passed an order on June 3 seeking a response from the State Government to Mr. Seetaram’s allegations within a month. Earlier, the Commission, vide its order on January 12, had directed the Home Secretary to submit a detailed report. “Despite service of notice and number of adjournments, the Home Secretary has not yet submitted the report nor sought any extension of time to submit the report. “The Commission has received a copy of the letter dated May 13 from the Director-General of Police and Inspector-General of Police to the Additional Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary (Home),” it said. The journalist accused the Home Minister of supporting the Sangh Pariwar elements in the coastal district. He urged the State Government not to challenge the petition filed by him seeking a compensation of Rs. 50 lakh for committing atrocities on Karavali Ale and its promoters and to remit the amount and to pay the penalty.
