Amendments to MCI Act sought

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi on Saturday called for amendments to the Medical Council of India Act to set in place a regulatory framework to be followed by the private sector.

Speaking at a function to felicitate Vellore Institute of Technology Chancellor G.Vishwanathan here, Mr. Ravi said government cannot be a mere spectator to what is going on in the higher education sector.

Education had become an issue in recent times. As a result of improved economic status, every family wanted to put its children through institutions of higher education. In such circumstances, the government alone cannot deliver and private colleges can make a huge contribution. However, when the demand exceeds the supply [of seats], pricing becomes an issue, Mr.Ravi said.
