Assam higher education curriculum to be revamped

Guwahati: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Saturday the academic curriculum of Gauhati and Dibrugarh Universities would be linked to that of Delhi University.

He said Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University Dipak Paintal had agreed to be the education adviser of the Assam government.

Mr. Gogoi recently met Prof. Paintal in Delhi and discussed the modernisation of the curriculum of higher education in the State to make it qualitative and job-oriented. During the discussions, the Director of Education, Delhi University, gave a power point presentation with suggestions for enhancing the standard of the government schools.

The government has decided to constitute two education commissions, one for higher education and another for general education, involving eminent educationists from across the country.

Mr. Gogoi said his government would accord topmost priority to the development of sectors such as education, health, agriculture, power and employment generation. He said the thrust areas on employment generation programmes would be development of small and medium scale industries.

“The government is contemplating the creation of two lakh employment opportunities in the next two years,” Mr. Gogoi said. An Employment Generation Commission consisting experts from different fields such as education, industry, etc. would be constituted soon. Reiterating his government’s commitment to raising the standard of living of the rural masses, Mr. Gogoi said a Rural Infrastructure Development Authority would be created soon. To minimise housing problems, a Rural Housing Corporation would be set up.
