Coast Guard rescue 41
Staff Reporter
MUMBAI: The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) saved 41 mariners on their way to the Okha Port in Gujarat. The two-day rescue operation was conducted in tempestuous conditions in North Arabian sea, off the Gujarat coast.
A Coast Guard press release said, 41 seafarers aboard three vessels were brought to Gujarat’s Porbandar port and given medical aid.
Two ships, MSV Safina Hussani and MSV Khwaja-Al-Kareem, with 20 onboard were travelling from Sharjah to Okha when they were caught in a storm. They sank about 50 km Northwest of Gujarat’s Dwarka Island.
On Thursday, the ICGS Sangram located MSV Safina Hussani, a large part of which had already sunk. While searching for MSV Khwaja-Al-Kareem, the Coast Guard located another ship, MSV Gayatri, in distress. This vessel, with 21 crew members, was on its way from Yemen to Okha. On the second day, an ICGS helicopter spotted MSV Khwaja-Al-Kareemat 1 p.m. But the vessel had sunk and nine of its crew members were trying to stay afloat on a small boat, said Deputy Inspector GeneralCoast Guard, Manoj Baadkar.
