COIMBATORE: The need for continuous research to make health sciences up-to-date with the health care requirements of the community was stressed at the inaugural of a workshop on “Research Designs in Health Sciences”, organised by the P.S.G. College of Nursing here on Thursday.

Participating as the chief guest, Mr. Radhakrishnan pointed at the major role nanotechnology was set to play in medical science. Stressing research in this area, he said: “We do not give adequate attention to research. Students who research are upset that teachers do not accept their views, because of the latter’s limited knowledge. The students must have the right to express a different opinion and the faculty must encourage a spirit of enquiry in them,” he said.

Delivering the keynote address, former professor in the Department of Public Health and Mortality Studies, Mumbai, C.P. Prakasam said the health scenario kept changing from time-to-time. By the time the students of medicine and other related courses stepped out of college, the requirement of society was far ahead and greater than what was learnt in the institutions.

As for research, there was dearth of knowledge in both the existing and emerging areas. Therefore, there must be immense focus on not only the concept of research but also the methodology.

Principal of the P.S.G. College of Nursing Elizabeth Jean Abraham and Head of the Department of Research Subhadra Iyengar also spoke.
