15 village panchayats are honoured with this award ever year

ARIYALUR: The district administration has invited applications for the Uttamar Gandhi Panchayat Award for 2008-09.

The award instituted by the State Government in 2006-07 factors in the works undertaken, income generation activities and new initiatives by the village panchayats under the purview the department of Rural Development.

Fifteen village panchayats are honoured every year with this award that constitutes a certificate, a citation and a cash prize of five lakh rupees. In addition, the president of the chosen panchayat is awarded with a certificate and a medal, the District Collector Anil Meshram said in a press release.

Panchayats applying for the award have to furnish evidences of the works performed and special initiatives undertaken from 2003-04 to 2007-08 with the district administration by July 31.

In case of requirement, additional information will be obtained from the panchayat presidents.

A Committee headed by the Collector will analyse the applications and send the list of eligible village panchayats to the Government, the release said.

Another press release said the Collector presided over the Jamabandhi held at Pottaveli, Iluppaipur, Rayampuram, Chennivanam, Ottakovil, Govindapuram and a few other villages.

Accompanied by senior officials including the Ariyalur RDO Devarajan and District Supply Officer Nagarajan, the Collector examined the village records to determine if the benefits reached the deserving people.

He instructed officials to act promptly on the petitions he received from the village administrative officers.
