Child-friendly scheme launched

Workshop held for village panchayat presidents

KRISHNAGIRI: The Child-Friendly Village Planning Scheme was launched in 58 village panchayats in Mathur and Uthangarai blocks on Saturday.

In connection with this, a workshop was conducted for the village panchayat presidents, 20 block coordinators and 30 volunteers in Krishnagiri. The workshop was conducted jointly by the district administration, UNICEF and SEARCHE, an NGO from Bangalore.

The aim of the scheme and the method of implementation was explained to the panchayat presidents.

As a prelude to the programme, a five-day training programme would be conducted in Nochikuppam and Mathur. A total of 20 block level coordinators of UNICEF and 30 volunteers will give training to the 58 panchayat presidents.

These volunteers will work jointly with the panchayat presidents to ensure safe drinking water, sensitisation of total sanitation programme, identify and admit dropout children in schools, neo-natal care, nutrition and on creating HIV/AIDS awareness among villagers.

These volunteers and village panchayat presidents will identify the basic necessities of the village and would take measures to implement them through the Panchayat Level Convergence Committee. Field-level employees of Education, Health, Revenue, Development and Social Welfare Departments will co-operate with them to take effective measures in all spheres.

Collector V.K. Shanmugam explained the structure of Panchayat Level Convergence Committee, Block Level Task Force and District Level Task Force.

A. Devaraj, Project Officer, Water and Eco-Sanitation, UNICEF, Rajendran and Panneer Selvam, Project Coordinators, SEARCH; and V. Jaishankar, District Support Officer, UNICEF, spoke.

Ramakrishnan, Assistant Director, Panchayat, welcomed the gathering. P. Ganesamurthy, UNICEF consultant, proposed a vote of thanks.
