Running EMU coaches get detached

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: In a freak incident at the suburban Chromepet railway station on Friday morning, eight coaches of a Tambaram-bound EMU train got detached from the rest of the rake and began to move on their own, giving anxious moments to the commuters.

Southern Railway sources said the 12-car rake from the Chennai Beach was just entering Chromepet station at 10.30 a.m. when the coupler between the fourth and fifth coaches broke. As a result, eight coaches in the rear were separated.

As the train moved towards Tambaram with only four coaches, the remaining eight coaches moved in the same direction due to the momentum and came to a halt after some time.

The guard immediately alerted over the wireless the motorman, who brought the EMU to a halt.

Southern Railway ordered a departmental enquiry into the incident.
