Making a difference: The Digital Equalizer Project learning centre of the Government Higher Primary School, Munnenkolalu, Bangalore, which was inaugurated on Saturday. BANGALORE: Students of the Government Higher Primary School, Munnenkolalu, Bangalore, had reason to cheer on Saturday when 10 computers were given to the school by the American India Foundation Trust and DELL India Private Ltd. The Digital Equalizer (DE) Project learning centre was also inaugurated. J. Sundarakrishnan, Director of Operations, DE Project, said, “This programme is being inaugurated in nine government higher primary schools in Bangalore and 24 schools across India. The intention is to use technology as a tool to enrich the teaching-learning process.” Lalith Prasad C.S., State team leader, DE Project, added, “This will be a three-year partnership. We will provide schools with infrastructure and facilitate the employment of computer-literate teachers who will guide the staff and students to exploit it to its full potential.” These teachers are on the payroll of the trust and will work with the students as facilitators for three years. A coordinator will visit these schools once a week to instruct regular teachers about the use of computers. The centre was inaugurated by Director of Sales of Dell India Pvt., Ltd., Mahesh Bhalla, who engaged students in a lively interaction to help them understand the power of the Internet. Uma Maheshwar Rao, an educationist commented that this would be a welcome deviation from the chalk-and-talk method but cautioned the gathering to remember that such measures can only supplement teaching and not replace it. Former Minister of State for Home Ashwath Narayan Reddy, Block Education Officer Nanjundaiah and headmasters of the nine schools in Bangalore that are part of the project were present. The other schools where computers will be provided under this programme are: Government Higher Primary Schools at Veerabhadranagar, Chandranagar, Ittamadu, Sunkadakatte, Pantharapalya, Halagevaddarahalli, Kithaganahalli and Government Model Primary School, Puttenahalli.
