Campaign against drug abuse

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A series of awareness programmes were held across the city on Friday to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

A programme organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau in association with the Information and Public Relations Department for school students began with the screening of Onnu Pottichalo, a tele-film against drug abuse made by the students and teachers of St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School.

Nearly 600 students from six city schools attended the event.

Pamphlets were distributed to schoolchildren warning against the misuse of drugs and the steps to be taken by teachers and parents if a student was found to be hooked on drugs. The pamphlet also advises girl students to guard against drugs that can be mixed in drinks. Teachers and parents were advised to care for and spend time with children, keep an interest in their activities, disseminate information on drugs and conduct random checks in hostel rooms.

The awareness campaign organised at the Government Model School, Thycaud, in association with the Indo-Arab Cultural Forum was inaugurated by Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, head of the ruling family of erstwhile Travancore.
