Vijayawada
A representative of Vimukti in thoughtful mood at a meeting of the organisation in the city on Friday. — VIJAYAWADA: Vimukti, a forum of victims of illegal trafficking and sex trade, has vehemently opposed any move to legalise prostitution in the country. It feared that it would proliferate illegal trafficking. At its State-level executive meeting here on Friday, the organisation passed some more resolutions seeking a helping hand from the government. Stressing the importance of welfare of second generation sex workers, the forum demanded the government to provide free education to children of sex workers up to graduation. Vimukti state convener T. Sujatha expressed the view that there was a need to set up special courts to conduct trial of the cases pertaining to illegal trafficking and dispose them of at the earliest. Emphasising the need to enact even stringent laws to put an end to trafficking, she appealed to the law enforcing agencies to punish the traffickers sternly under the ITP Act. Ms. Sujatha wanted the government to extend medical facilities as well as employment opportunities to the women who were forced into sex trade. The State government should provide ration cards and house sites for the victims of illegal trafficking, she said. Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu, who participated as chief guest, said that the Government was implementing various schemes for the welfare of sex workers and victims of illegal trafficking. ICDS Krishna District Project Director K. Suhasini Devi said that existing schemes were “more than enough” for the welfare of sex workers.
