Minimally invasive bypass performed

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Without cutting the sternum as done in conventional bypass procedure, surgeons at the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) performed minimally invasive coronary bypass grafting on a 64-year-old patient here on Friday.

Led by guest faculty Joseph Sabik, III, staff surgeon in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and B. Bhaskar Rao, cardio-thoracic surgeon and CEO KIMS, the doctors performed the operation through an 8 cm incision under the left breast to remove an arterial block for creating an alternative pathway for the blood to reach the heart muscle.

Giving details at a press conference, Dr. Bhaskar Rao said the advantage of the new procedure which was being done in a few centres in the country was that it involved shortened post-operative intensive care unit (ICU) stay and enabled faster recovery of the patient. While five to six bottles of blood would be required during a conventional procedure, just one bottle might be needed in a minimally invasive operation and the patient could be taken off the ventilator after an hour as against 24 hours in the normal surgery. The cost of both the procedures was almost same.
