ELURU: The acute shortage of wagons has seemingly turned financial situation for paddy growers from bad to worse. The millers reportedly suspended payments to farmers after procuring the produce citing their inability to lift the stocks in the godown for want of wagons. According to information, payments to farmers are pending for more than a month in West Godavari district. The dues with each miller mounted up to Rs. 50 lakh, it is said. “What can we do after all when we failed to covert the produce procured from farmers into cash due to the failure of the Railways to provide wagons for lifting the stocks,” says a spokesman of the West Godavari District Rice Millers’ Association. The Food Corporation of India has placed an indent to the South Central Railways seeking deployment of 40 rakes. However, the Railway officials of Vijayawada division are said to have expressed their inability to meet the demand till July 15 as they are ‘preoccupied’ with transport of mangoes and fertilizers.
