ESI Corporation accepts State’s request

12 ESI hospitals to get nursing colleges

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Private hospital employees and teaching and non-teaching staff of unaided schools would also be brought under the ambit of the ESI scheme, Labour Minister P. K. Gurudasan told the Assembly on Friday.

Replying to questions, the Labour Minister said the State’s request to this effect had been accepted by the ESI Corporation authorities.

Nursing colleges

The ESI Corporation had also agreed in principle to sanction nursing colleges attached to 12 ESI hospitals in the State.

The government had also sought establishment of six new hospitals in the State at Vizhinjam, Cherthala, Kanjikode, Keralapuram, Malappuram and Kasaragod, Mr. Gurudasan said.

The Minister said the government had requested the Centre to reserve 20 per cent of the seats in the medical college being set up by the ESI Corporation at Parippally in Kollam district for children of members in the ESI scheme. The Centre had agreed to reserve 10 per cent of the seats for them and 10 per cent for the children of employers besides another 5 per cent for children of ESI Corporation employees.

Construction work

The government had proposed construction work costing Rs.525 crore to the Corporation and the proposal was likely to be accepted in a few days’ time, he added.

Power projects

Electricity Minister A.K. Balan told the House in reply to questions that the government proposed to implement mini hydel projects that would have a combined capacity of 50 MW as part of the anti-recession package announced by the Finance Minister.

Streetlights

The government was also planning to implement a streetlight modernisation scheme as part of its energy conservation efforts.

The drive to popularise CFL lamps was expected to help the State save power worth Rs.240 crore, Mr. Balan said.
