THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city-based Institute of Management in Government (IMG), the largest training institute in the country and the apex training institute of the government, is in a quality improvement mode.

With over 1,300 training programmes organised annually and 20 to 30 training programmes daily, the IMG has initiated steps to improve the quality of training being offered with the use of information technology.

“The major thrust will be to improve the quality of training being offered. We will be open to tie-up with national institutes,” Director of IMG Ajay Kumar told The Hindu.

As part of improving the quality of training, the conduct of the course, calendar and training manual would be revamped. Mr. Ajay Kumar said a training database of the officials would be created and applications made online.

A trainer’s database would be created based on the feedback from participants. This would give the participants an opportunity to evaluate those taking classes and only those who got the prescribed marks would be allowed to impart training.

“The IMG has plans to provide laptop to those participating in training as part of the efforts to make them more IT-friendly. The institute has decided to drastically improve the quality of infrastructure and that of the canteen on the IMG premises.”

Mr. Ajay Kumar said the training for senior executives would commence with the Joint Military and Civil Training programme in August. The training was being organised in association with Lal Bahadur Sastry National Academy for Administration.

“The training is to be held at the Executive Training and Development Centre that has come up behind the administrative and training complex on Law College Road at a cost of Rs. 8 crore. The six-storey building with 45,000 sq.ft area has basement parking that can accommodate 40 cars at a time. A seminar hall with international standards that can seat 150 persons at a time, a computer lobby with 30 computers, faculty lounge, halls and four classrooms are the highlights of the new centre constructed under the MGP.”

In addition, the centre would have an entire floor dedicated for library. The 20,000 books, most of them from areas of management and training, and over 125 periodicals now at the main training complex would be shifted to the new premises.

The IMG is gearing up to organise 72 training programmes of the Union government during the current year. The training of IAS probationers has already commenced. Besides, a host of training programmes have also been chalked out for the officials.

Along with the IITM-K, the IMG is launching one-year PG diploma in e-governance. The course, to be held at the IITM-K and the IMG, will begin in August this year, he added.

The IMG was established as an autonomous body under the auspices of the State in 1981 with the objective of developing managerial skills, organisational abilities, leadership qualities and decision making skills among different categories of employees.
