Films on violence against women

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: A two-day film festival on violence against women and women’s resistance — Daughters of Fire — will be held at the Alliance Française de Bangalore from Saturday.

The festival is being organised by Vimochana, Asian Women’s Human Rights Council, Bangalore Film Society and Alliance Française de Bangalore.

As a pre-event to the Courts of Women on Dowry and related forms of violence in the third week of July, the film festival hopes to initiate some dialogue on issues of gender-based violence in preparation for the final event.

“The courts of women is an attempt at bringing the phenomena of dowry violence that has been made invisible, normal and routine back to the centre of public consciousness and conscience,” says Shakun of Vimochana.

The films will reflect on the nature of violence, particularly against women, and the institution of marriage.
