MADURAI: As the city’s public are going to witness two solar eclipses on July 22 and January 15, 2010, Tamil Nadu Science Forum (TNSF) plans to conduct a series of science popularisation activities. The former is a partial solar eclipse which would be total in eastern parts of India and the other is an annular solar eclipse which is specific to southern India and would be seen well in Madurai. Popularisation activities start with a seminar on ‘Solar Eclipses at Madurai’ for college and school teachers on July 27 at Lady Doak College, organised jointly with the college’s Physics department. Chief Educational Officer R. M. Pandurangan will inaugurate the seminar, the topics of which are Eclipses Through Civilisations, Myths of Eclipses, Science of Eclipses and Safe viewing of Eclipses. TNSF will also organise a State-level seminar on ‘Women and Eclipses’ during their Third Samam Conference at SOCO Trust with a special lecture by S. Vincent, Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology. AIR programmeApart from holding seminars, All India Radio will broadcast three weekly episodes on solar eclipse between 8.p.m. and 8.30.p.m. on Saturdays — on July 4, 11 and 18 — with the support of Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The forum also plans a grand mobilisation of students and the general public on the day of the eclipse between 6.30.a.m. and 7.30 a.m. with telescopes and solar filters in a public place with a running radio commentary by experts. To demystify the beliefs connected with the solar eclipse, an ‘eclipse breakfast’ has been arranged on that day. TNSF is making arrangements to bring solar filters from Mumbai. Those interested in these activities can contact forum secretary L. Narayanasamy.
