Traffic police to conduct a study

Special Correspondent

About accident-prone areas in the city

MADURAI: In a bid to prevent road accidents and create awareness of road safety among motorists, the police would study accident-prone spots on different angles, said Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan here on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, he said that the micro-level traffic management study would look into the reasons for the accidents , for instance drunken driving or rash and reckless driving, the timing of accident (peak or non-peak hour), types of vehicles involved in the accident, among others. “We will take corrective measures wherever required. For instance, to reduce the speed, if speed breakers are required, they would be laid.”

Further, steps are being taken to involve local and private hospitals situated in the respective police station limits.

In the event of any accident, the victims had to be rushed within the golden hour. For this purpose, private hospitals and ambulance services would be useful in trauma care management, Mr. Nandabalan said.

More subways

With ever-increasing vehicular population, the traffic police were not only suggesting construction of a few subways for easy movement of pedestrians, but also plan to educate them (pedestrians) to use the subway near Government Rajaji Hospital and the foot over-bridge near Periyar bus stand. “We will deploy policemen for the purpose and expect public cooperation,” he said.

The police are studying a few stretches in the city where one-way traffic system could be introduced. The traffic congestion experienced near railway station, especially between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., would be solved soon, Mr. Nandabalan said.
