Customs seize ornamental marine fishes

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs at the Anna International Terminal here seized 75 live rare marine ornamental fishes from a passenger who arrived from Singapore on Thursday.

A press release from the Customs said that they intercepted a passenger on suspicion and examination of his checked-in baggage led to the seizure.

The fishes, valued at Rs. 75,000, were packed in polythene bags, filled with oxygen and water.

Import of live ornamental fishes required licence from the Director General of Foreign Trade and clearance from the Animal Quarantine Department.

As the passenger was not in possession of any valid document for the import, the fishes were confiscated and ordered for re-export to Singapore.

The passenger was penalised for the offence, the release said.
