Hand reconstructive microsurgery workshop

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: People in rural areas requiring treatment for a hand injury often delay treatment for want of specialists. This reduces their chance of regaining the normal function of the hand.

Plastic surgeons specialising in the field say that the delay is because healthcare workers in primary healthcare centres (PHCs) are not aware of the facilities available in government hospitals and hence could not guide the patient well.

In this backdrop, the State government will on Friday launch a two-day training programme on hand reconstructive microsurgery techniques for the PHC staff, at the Institute of Public Health at Poonamallee. The training will be imparted in a phased manner to doctors and nurses in PHCs across the State.

Healthcare professionals from the four health unit districts of Saidapet, Poonamallee, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram would participate in the programme in the city. Every month, such two-day programme is expected to be conducted to cover all the PHCs in the State.
