MADURAI: An awareness programme on ‘Schemes of skill development initiative on modular employable skills’ and ‘Establishment of vocational training institutes by industry and industry associations’ will be held here on Friday. A combined effort of Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA), Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) and Employment and Training Institute, Madurai Region, the programme is intended to increase the employability of the huge human resource pool of the nation. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, N. Somasundaram, MADITSSIA president, said that the SSI associations, trade unions and academicians from southern districts of the State would take part in the programme. The association has also sought land from the State Government for establishing a vocational training centre in Madurai. The programme would highlight apprenticeship programme for Industrial Training Institute (ITI) students, approval of industries as vocational training institutes and upgrading Government ITIs under public-private partnerships. “MADITSSIA is considering a proposal to upgrade the ITIs at Mudukulathur and Ramanathapuram under a Government scheme,” he said. K. R. Gnanasambandan, vice-president, TANSTIA, said that unemployability was more a problem for India than unemployment. Further, for industries to obtain ISO certification, their workers need to be qualified and have requisite certification and that is what the programme would focus on, he said. K. Kadirvel, Regional Joint Director (Training), said that the Central Government would provide Rs. 2.5 crore as a long-term interest-free loan for trade bodies willing to upgrade ITIs. “These funds could be used by the society, which has to be formed for this purpose and will be headed by the industry partner, to modernise equipment and add new trades to the ITIs,” he said. V. S. Manimaran, secretary, MADITSSIA, was present.
