TDP MLA D Umamaheswara Rao accuses government of misguiding farmers In view of the dry spell, farmers decide to adopt a wait and watch approach VIJAYAWADA: In view of the existing uncertainty over release of water for irrigation, farmers and people’s representatives in the district are asking the Government to give correct information about when exactly it can provide water. Their plea comes in the wake of water not being released on June 20 as per a recommendation made by the Krishna District Irrigation Advisory Board. UncertaintyFarmers in some areas went ahead with preparing their nurseries, thinking that they would get water from the canals. They subsequently faced problems with the nursery beds getting dried up. Kisan Service Organisation secretary P.S.R. Das says that uncertainty over the release of water is creating problems for farmers and a definite date should be given, if possible, so that there will be no confusion. Farmers in Gudivada and surrounding areas have started growing nurseries under borewells. In some areas, farmers went ahead with nurseries following a few spells of rains over a week ago. There was no rain since then and this has caused the nursery beds to go dry. Farmers expected release of water in the canals but it did not become a reality in view of the lack of adequate water in the reservoirs upstream. TDP MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao blames the Government for “misguiding” the farmers on the issue of release of water for nurseries though there was no sufficient water in the reservoirs. He finds fault with the ruling party leaders for not bothering about the fallout of their “false assurance” that water would be released on June 20. “Now there is no water till now. What is the future plan of the Government? Why is it not able to release water for nurseries?” he questions. In Kaikaluru, Mudinepalli, Avanigadda and other areas, many farmers did not go for nurseries in view of the uncertainty over the monsoon. Despite the assurance of release of water on June 20, these farmers did not venture to start their agricultural operations. In view of the dry spell still continuing, they have decided to adopt a wait and watch approach.
