SIMA to focus on skill training

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: The Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) plans a series of programmes for the development of skills of textile workers, as part of its platinum jubilee celebrations.

Association Deputy Chairman J. Thulasidharan told The Hindu that a technical training institute, established here jointly with the PSG Institute, would be inaugurated during the celebrations next month.

The industrial training institute would offer two-year courses for spinning and weaving fitters and in textile mechatronics.

It will also have certificate programmes in specific fields. The building cost alone was about Rs. 1.5 crore. Machinery for the laboratories would be given by the industry.

The institute would gradually offer technical courses in all sectors of the textile industry, from spinning to garmenting.

The SIMA also proposed internship and distance education programmes in management, including personnel management and industrial relations.

A textile machinery exhibition with about 150 stalls would be organised here from July 24 to 27.

The event “Texfair 2009” would showcase state-of-the-art machinery, accessories, spares and logistic facilities. About 80 per cent of the stalls had been booked. Those interested in participating in the fair could contact the association (0422-4225333).
