CHENNAI: The south zone unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau here has organised various programmes, including a ‘human chain’ and rally by school students, to observe Friday as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. As part of this year’s campaign called by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the NCB and the NIB CID wing of the Tamil Nadu Police will display banners and posters at public places and hold workshops for NGOs in alliance with TTK Hospital. Director General of Police K.P. Jain, who will flag off the students’ rally will later open an exhibition at the Santhome Higher Secondary School. Members of Buddar Kalaikuzhu-Tamil Maiyam will stage street plays at vantage points in the city. Pamphlets highlighting the ills of drug abuse will be distributed and awareness messages relayed across the CCTV systems at airports and railway stations. This is the third year in running that the United Nations is observing the day on theme ‘Do drugs control your life? Your Life. Your Community. No Place for Drugs.’ Earlier, the focus was on drug abuse and drug cultivation; this year the awareness campaign will hinge on illicit drug trafficking.
