Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A total of 2,263 children have undergone corrective heart surgeries under two schemes of the State government — the Young Children’s Heart Surgery Scheme and School Children’s Heart Surgery Scheme — at a cost of Rs.13.37 crore. This includes 653 children who benefited from the first scheme and 1,610 who benefited under the second, according to a release. These surgeries were performed in private hospitals in line with an agreement with the State.

In addition, 1,300 children were operated upon at two government hospitals . This takes the total number of children benefiting from the schemes, in both private and public sectors, to 3,820. Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam and Principal Secretary, Health, V.K. Subburaj, met Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday to update him on the progress of these schemes.
