RECOGNISING COMPLIANCE: Coimbatore City Police Commissioner K.C. Mahali (third right) presenting a gift to a motorist at Bharati Matriculation School on Thursday. —

Coimbatore: Even as the police are enforcing road rules realising a fine of Rs. 30 lakh annually, there is a pertinent need for a culture of compliance on the part of the citizens for the sake of their safety and not for complying with the rule, observed K.C. Mahali, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore city, on Thursday.

He was speaking at a function organised by the Bharatgas in association with ‘The Hindu’, Coimbatore City Police and Traffic Wardens Organisation. The initiative was to identify motorists who complied with the rule at five traffic signals in the city on Wednesday and honour them with a givt at a function held on Thursday.

Mr. Mahali said that the police apart from educating the motorists believe in enforcing the rule and penalising the offenders.

He appreciated the positive gesture of honouring motorists who complied with the rule.

He said that by appreciating those complying with the rule, a culture of compliance could be ensured.

Touching upon the need for wearing helmets, Mr. Mahali said for the last one year people had been debating as to whether wearing helmet was compulsory or not.

Mr. Mahali exhorted the people to get out of such thoughts and said it is not a question of complying with the rule but the question of protecting one’s head and life. On the issue of pillion riders not wearing helmets, Mr. Mahali said, “life of a wife is also precious as that of the husband.”

He gave away gifts to nearly 100 motorists who were identified for observing lane discipline, stopping at the stop line, not using cell phone while on wheels and wearing helmets while riding two-wheeler and seat belts in cars. One of the recipients K. Kalyanasundaram, hailing the initiative, said next year more people should get the gift.

Regional LPG Co-ordinator of Bharatgas P.J. Vijaykar; Territory Manager (LPG) S. Thangavel; Chief Traffic Warden A. Mahesh; Regional General Manager of The Hindu D. Rajkumar; Assistant Managers of Bharatgas Sandya, and Kiran; Secretary of Bharati Matric School C. Anand; and Assistant Commissioners of Police A.S. Nandakumar (Intelligence), K. Kumarasami (Law and Order – West) and Annadurai (Central) took part.
