Awards presented

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: Collector P. Umanath on Monday exhorted the elected heads of the village panchayats to help in the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme.

Addressing the panchayat chiefs after presenting the Nirmal Gram Puraskar awards to the best performing panchayat heads, Dr. Umanath said that Coimbatore bagged third position in the implementation of various schemes and it was lagging behind only in respect of NREG. “NREG is aimed at bringing in infrastructure to the villages and to help the beneficiaries as well as the public,” he said.

Village panchayat chiefs should join hands with the administration to implement more NREG schemes and help the district improve its position in terms of implementation compared to other districts.

Dr. Umanath presented awards to 49 panchayat presidents coming under 12 panchayat unions and said that he was happy to present the awards to so many local bodies. The function was attended by Project Officer of District Rural Development Agency P. Anandhraj and Co-ordinator of Total Sanitation Project P. Sakthivel.

He said that implementing schemes could be easy but motivating people to implement or take part in schemes that were linked to their life was a stupendous task.
