Amalraj and nuns at a gender sensitisation programme in Udhagamandalam on Wednesday. — Udhagamandalam: The need to treat men and women as equals was underscored at a training programme on gender sensitisation organised under the aegis of the Udhagamandalam Social Service Society (USSS) here on Wednesday. Inaugurating the programme the Bishop of Ootacamund Diocese Rt. Rev. A. Amalraj said that at all levels appropriate representation should be given to women. In educational and other institutions women should be respected and treated with dignity. Professor, Providence College for Women, Sujatha said that during the days of yore women had been disregarded and not given their due. Stating that the discrimination should disappear, she said that focus should be on their emancipation, liberation and empowerment. The project Officer, USSS, Supraba, said that the role of women in the organised sector should become prominent. The Executive Director, USSS, Rev. Father R.P. Jayakumar, said that women should be respected and their contributions recognised. In matters relating to policy or administration their role should be prominent. Among the participants were heads of educational institutions and service organisations.
