Udhagamandalam
Agitated: Members emphasising a point at a municipal council meeting in Udhagamandalam on Thursday.— Udhagamandalam: Members of the Udhagamandalam Municipal Council resolved on Thursday to oppose a circular of the district administration relating to constructions here. At a meeting held here, the chairman of the Council, R. Rajendran, who presided, said that the circular dated March 30, 2009 had stipulated that even for putting up buildings on 1500 sq.ft and below no objection certificates should be obtained from the forest department, the agricultural engineering department, the department of geology and mines and the site should be approved by the Deputy Director, Town and Country Planning, Coimbatore. He said that a circular of the district administration dated February 6, 2003 had stated that plans for putting up buildings on 1500 sq.ft and below had been exempted from obtaining NOCs from the three departments and the site approval could be done by the local body itself. The council wanted the status quo to be maintained. Storing of beefAt an ordinary meeting of the UMC held earlier, the action initiated recently by municipal health officials against beef merchants for allegedly storing beef and bones in unhygienic conditions at the abattoir near here dominated the proceedings. Describing the action as arbitrary, memberssaid that the municipality should be blamed for the unhygienic conditions at the abattoir. Mr. Rajendran said that the district administration was looking into the matter since the beef merchants have sought its intervention. The Commissioner, S. Ramamoorthy, said that the unauthorised storing of beef and bones was the main reason for the conditions in the abattoir becoming unhygienic.
