‘Expedite work on Hubli-Kalghatgi-Ankola railway line’

Correspondent

Sirsi: North Kanara District Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture president G.G. Hegde Kadekodi and honorary secretary V.S. Sonde have sent a memorandum to the Union Minister of State Railways, K.H. Muniyappa, urging him to accelerate work on the railway lines between Hubli-Kalghatgi-Ankola and Shimoga-Talguppa-Honnavar in the South Western Railway, according to a release here on Wednesday.

They have, in the memorandum, said that these two railway lines were required to improving infrastructure thereby giving a boost to the speedy development of rail-road communication to the Jog Falls, the Karwar port, the Sea Bird Naval Base, the Kaiga Atomic Power Project, among others.

To avoid traffic congestion on National Highways 17 and 63, railway lines linking the hinterland in north and south Karnataka with the port at Karwar was inevitable, they have said.

Konkan Rail

They have mentioned that though the Konkan Railway is functioning since a decade now, the benefit from it for Uttara Kannada district commuters is negligible as there are only minimum stopping facilities in the district.

They have also sought extension of trains plying between Bangalore and Mangalore up to Karwar Railway Station.
