Vijayawada
VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Hotel Owners’ Association on Wednesday strongly opposed the VMC’s move to levy user charges on garbage lifting from hotels. The association demanded Municipal Commissioner P.S. Pradyumna to release a white paper on the expenditure incurred by the VMC for lifting the garbage in the city. Association secretary K. Pattabhi Ram said at a press conference that hoteliers opposed user charges on garbage in toto. The corporation officials convened a meeting with the hoteliers in the city a couple of months ago in this regard. But, they could not provide requisite information, such as the total staff strength, number of vehicles used, and expenditure involved in garbage lifting, he said. Though Mr. Pradyumna assured to constitute a committee to study the issue, it had not been honoured. “The VMC is planning to introduce user charges through backdoor,” he alleged. Mr. Pattabhi Ram alleged that the corporation was looking at garbage as a revenue generating source. “Unless we receive the facts, we will continue to oppose it.”
